A maximum power point tracker, or MPPT, is basically an efficient DC-to-DC converter used to maximize the power output of a solar system. The first MPPT was invented by a small Australian company called AERL way back in 1985, and this technology is now used in virtually all grid-connect solar inverters and all MPPT solar charge controllers.
